Jade and Lacquer in China
In the East, objects made of jade and lacquer were displayed in courts and in elegant homes and considered luxuries the way objects made of gold and silver were in the West. The quantity of symbolic or auspicious jade and lacquerware images reflects the high esteem in which these materials were held. Much of this value is derived from the complexity of the processes used to carve jade and to produce lacquerware -- both art forms require sophisticated skills. |
